    Abstract [en]

    The Swedish Deep Stabilization Research Centre (SD) was established between 1995 to 2006 to perform research, development, demonstration and implementation in the field of deep soil mixing. The Centre comprised of 23 members, including government authorities, contractors, consulting companies, binder producers, universities, a research institute and research funding organisations. The R&D activities in-cluded Experience data-base, Properties of stabilised soils, Function of deep mixing improvements, Execution and Control. The results of the SD activities contribute to the advancement of deep mixing and the knowledge gained encourages the use of deep mixing in a better way. Furthermore, the gained knowledge also gives rise to the use of deep mixing in wider range of soil types and in new applications, e.g. reduction of vibrations at high speed trains and stabilisation / solidification of contaminated ground. The results have been published in two series of publications from the SD. All publications can be ordered from Swedish Geotechnical Institute. Two international conferences have been arranged by the SD, 1999 and 2005, both in Stockholm with a large number of international participants.

    Increasing sea transport volumes require expansion of ports and due to longer, wider and more deep-draught ships considerable dredging of sediments often contaminated with heavy metals and organic contaminants has to be implemented. Handling options have to be identified in each actual case and the choice of option should be based on a sustainability approach, considering economy, environment and social aspects. In the EU-funded project "Sustainable Management of Contaminated Sediments in the Baltic Sea" (SMOCS; www.smocs.eu) within the Baltic Sea Region Programme 2007-20 13, tools for assessment and decision making are developed, i. e. Life Cycle Analysis (LCA), Risk Assessment (RA) and Multi Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA). To develop the tools a series of case studies have been performed comparing different handling options such as land disposal, sea disposal, confined aquatic disposal and beneficial use in port constructions utilizing the stabilization/solidification technology.

    Sea transport is increasing due to its environmental and economic benefits. The related expansion of ports and the development towards longer, wider and more deep-draught ships cause a huge need for dredging of sediments in fairways and ports. A large volume of these sediments are contaminated with heavy metals and organic contaminants. Millions of m3 of these sediments have to be dredged and handled in the coming years according to studies performed by the SMOCS/PortInfra network. The SMOCS project (Sustainable Management of Contaminated Sediments) within the Baltic Sea Region Programme 2007- 2013 has developed a guideline on management of contaminated sediments based on a sustainability approach. Among all the studies as input for the guidance, a field test on the application of the stabilisation / solidification method for treatment of dredged contaminated sediments was implemented in the Port of Gävle, Sweden. The treated sediments were beneficially used as fill material in the new port area replacing ending natural resources. The outcome of the monitored field test shows that beneficial use of stabilized / solidified contaminated sediments can be applied in this type of geotechnical application in port constructions.

    Constructions activities in cities often imply large volumes of surplus material which could be treated by stabilization for re-use in new geotechnical constructions. Modification of dredged sediments by e.g. stabilization/solidification (s/s) is an example of sustainable handling option implying dredged contaminated sediments to become a potential resource for civil engineering constructions. The SMOCS project (Sustainable Management of Contaminated Sediments) within the Baltic Sea Region Programme 2007-2013 has developed a guideline based on a sustainability approach free to download at www.smocs.eu. The paper presents key issues in the guideline and highlights the importance of performing a field test as part of the design process. Two field tests with s/s-treated dredged sediments for new port areas are presented. Strength, permeability and leakage properties of s/s-treated contaminated sediments make beneficial use in geo-constructions possible. The influence of possible physical/chemical deterioration processes on the durability has been studied showing that freeze/thaw cycles might degrade the monolith of s/s-treated sediments. Consequently s/s-constructions shall be below freezing depth. Other deterioration processes such as salt and sulfate penetration were found of minor importance. Research is ongoing to study the influence of and how to cope with freeze/thaw cycles on the long-term properties.

The stabilization/solidification technology has been applied implying the beneficial use of such treated dredged contaminated sediments in port constructions reducing the use of ending natural resources.

    Ett antal reviderade europeiska standarder för geotekniska laboratorieförsök håller på att införas i Sverige. Utöver en översiktlig beskrivning behandlar denna artikel kommande ändringar i utvärdering av fallkonförsöket för bestämning av skjuvhållfasthet och konflytgräns. Den största ändringen gäller odränerad skjuvhållfasthet och innebär i allmänhet en 20 procentig reduktion för "ostörda" prover och en 8 procentig ökning för omrörda prover. Sensitiviteten blir som resultat 26 procent lägre. Artikeln beskriver bakgrunden till dessa ändringar som kommer bli märkbara för geotekniska handläggare. För att möjliggöra en vidareföring av tidigare svensk praxis har två SGF Notat upprättats.

Ökande krav via eurokoderna, ökande behov av modellering av jordrörelser för schakter i tätbebyggda områden och utredningar med omfattande skredriskkarteringar är exempel på drivkrafter. Eftersom det tidigare inte har funnits någon samlad information om triaxialförsök i Sverige, har SGF:s Laboratoriekommitté sammanställt en rapport för att ge handläggande geotekniker vägledning i hela kedjan från ax till limpa - det vill säga planering, beställning, utvärdering och tolkning av triaxialförsök.

    Risk Assessment and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) are used to understand the potential health and environmental impacts of the processes involved. The main tasks include: (1) Modelling the release, transport and distribution of contaminants (e.g. particles, fumes, waterborne emissions) to conduct exposure assessments; (2) A number of laboratory experiments (e.g. leaching and ecotoxicity tests) and field studies (at different stages of the life cycle of RA) will be conducted to produce the inventory of emissions from RA; (3) Compiling and characterising the results from the laboratory and field studies for further usage in the risk assessment models and in the LCA study; and (4) Sensitivity analysis as to how these impacts would vary across Europe and the relative importance of different stages in the life cycle. This paper outlines as a baseline scenario, the experiments that will be conducted, the datasets that will be compiled and how they will be used in the assessment of risk and environmental impacts, such as global warming potential, human health and ecotoxicity.

    A study of landslide risks along the Ångerman River in Sweden is currently being performed by the Swedish Geotechnical Institute (SGI) with assistance from the Geological Survey of Sweden (SGU). In this work, knowledge of the distribution of different types of sediment is crucial. The area shows large variations in both sediment stratigraphy and sediment thickness (depth to bedrock) which makes it difficult to describe geotechnical properties for larger areas based on sparse geotechnical field investigations (soundings and sampling). Within the study area, the Ångerman River valley contains numerous fluvial terraces at various elevations separated from the river by steep erosional scarps. Although fluvial sand caps the terraces, their heights are often derived from the underlying silt and clay, which in turn overlies till or glaciofluvial sediment. The thickness of these general stratigraphic units is difficult to determine from existing data. Thus, in 2018, an airborne transient electromagnetic (ATEM) survey was performed along the river and the surrounding river banks with the objective of mapping and characterizing the sediments down to bedrock. The surveyed area is 2 km wide and covers 80 km along the river with a flight line distance of 75 m. From the ATEM data, the 3D resistivity distribution of the ground down to about 100 m below the surface can be determined. The silt and clay show very low resistivity compared to the overlaying sand layers. Therefore, they can be easily distinguished in the resistivity models from the ATEM data. Furthermore, the depth to the more resistive underlaying till and bedrock can be delimited in most areas. The 3D resistivity model derived from the ATEM data was integrated with other geoscientific data such as; geotechnical drillings, information from water wells and surficial deposits maps using 3D modeling software (Geoscene 3D from I-GIS). Based on the modelling results, the area was divided into six different classes based on the soil stratigraphy. The current method of analysis uses detailed geotechnical investigations performed in one location to ground truth the interpretation of geophysical data over a broad area. With the new results based on the ATEM data, the planning of new geotechnical drillings can be better focused on more poorly-understood areas. Furthermore, the number of geotechnical field investigations can be reduced.

    Abstract [en]

    On the 29th of September, 1950, immediately after 8 o'clock in the morning, a very large landslide occurred in the valley of the Göta River in the southwest of Sweden. The site of the slide is located on the east bank of the river in a village named Surte, about 15 km from the mouth of the river in Kattegat, near Göteborg (Gothenburg). Geologically this province can briefly be characterized by archaean rock hills with Quaternary clay between them. The area which slipped has a width of about 400 m (parallel to the river) and a length of about 600 m, and the volume of the slide can be estimated at 4 million m3. The bank of the river had practically no height, and within a distance of about 200 m from the river the terrain was practically horizontal. Beyond that the terrain had a slope varying from 1:30 to 1:6. The slope was steepest in the northeast part of the slide area. An extensive field investigation was made in the area of the slide and in the adjacent regions. This investigation consisted in taking samples mainly by means of the soil sampler with metal foils and the piston sampler, soundings, vane tests, and measurements of the pore water pressure.
